Relieve Discomfort and Improve Breast Proportions

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that aims to remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, thereby achieving a lighter and more proportionate breast size. The surgery involves carefully reshaping the breasts while lifting them into a more youthful position. By reducing volume and improving contour, breast reduction in Murrieta and Temecula not only relieves symptoms such as back, neck, and shoulder pain but also enhances balance and comfort in your daily activities, clothing choices, and overall quality of life.

  • Improve posture and spinal alignment
  • Reduce skin irritation and bra strap indentations
  • Enhance mobility and ability to exercise comfortably
  • Create lighter, more proportionate breasts for your frame
  • Improve fit and comfort in clothing and bras

Am I a Suitable Candidate for Breast Reduction?

If you struggle with overly large breasts that cause physical discomfort, limit your activities, or make you feel self-conscious, you may be a strong candidate for breast reduction. This surgery helps improve your quality of life by reducing pain, enhancing mobility, and restoring natural proportions. During your consultation, our surgeons will carefully evaluate your health, breast size, body proportions, and personal goals to determine if this procedure is right for you.

You may be a candidate for breast reduction if:

  • You experience chronic neck, back, or shoulder pain from heavy breasts
  • You develop skin irritation or rashes beneath the breast folds
  • You struggle with poor posture or shoulder indentations from bra straps
  • You feel limited in exercise or physical activity due to breast size
  • You are self-conscious about your breast appearance or proportions
  • You have fully developed breasts and are in good overall health
  • You do not smoke or are willing to stop before and after surgery
  • You have realistic expectations and a stable body weight

What Happens During the Breast Reduction Procedure?

During your breast reduction, you are placed under general anesthesia so you remain asleep and comfortable throughout surgery. The surgeon makes incisions, often in an “anchor” pattern (around the areola, vertically down the breast, and along the crease). Through these openings, excess breast tissue, fat, and stretched skin are removed to reduce overall weight and volume. Liposuction may also be used in some cases to refine the contour.

After tissue removal, the nipple and areola are carefully repositioned higher on the breast mound to match your new proportions. The areola may also be reduced in size if enlarged. The remaining skin is brought together and tightened to create a firmer, lifted shape. Fine sutures are placed inside the breast to support its structure, and the incisions are then carefully closed. The result is smaller, lighter, and more balanced breasts.

What Is the Recovery Process Like After a Breast Reduction?

After your breast reduction, you can expect some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort in the first one to two weeks. Most patients return to light daily activities within a week, but strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least four to six weeks. You will notice an immediate relief in breast size and weight, though the final results take several months to appear as swelling subsides and scars mature. Most patients see their long-term outcome by 3 to 6 months.

To support proper healing, you will need to:

  • Wear a surgical bra or compression garment continuously for 4 to 6 weeks
  • Keep incisions clean and dry until cleared by your surgeon
  • Take prescribed medications to manage discomfort in the first week
  • Avoid lifting heavy objects or raising arms overhead for 2 weeks
  • Refrain from exercise or high-impact activity for 4 to 6 weeks
  • Attend follow-up appointments regularly for wound and scar monitoring

Breast Reduction FAQs

Will breast reduction affect my ability to breastfeed?

Breast reduction surgery may impact breastfeeding ability depending on the technique used and the amount of tissue removed. During your consultation at Advanced Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Center, Dr. Geldwert and Dr. Leong will discuss your future family plans and recommend the most tissue-preserving approach whenever possible.

Will I have visible scarring after breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction does result in some scarring, as incisions are necessary to remove excess tissue. However, Dr. Geldwert and Dr. Leong use precise surgical techniques to minimize visibility, and incisions are typically placed in areas easily concealed by a bra or swimsuit. Scars generally fade significantly over 12 to 18 months.

Is breast reduction covered by insurance?

In some cases, breast reduction may be covered by insurance when deemed medically necessary — for example, when large breasts cause chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain. We recommend contacting your insurance provider prior to your consultation to understand your coverage and what documentation may be required.

Can breast reduction be combined with other procedures?

Breast reduction is commonly combined with a breast lift for enhanced contouring, or performed alongside other body procedures as part of a more comprehensive surgical plan. Dr. Geldwert and Dr. Leong will evaluate your goals during your consultation and help determine whether combining procedures is safe and appropriate for you.
